How to handle homework

London, August 31, 2005
•Manage your time. This sounds really square, but a diary is a great way to organise what needs to be done and when. Instead of looking at all the work you’ve got to do and having a panic attack and passing out. A diary (whether electronic or paper) can help you working back from deadlines, making sure you’re not leaving everything to the last minute.

•Break big chunks of work into smaller chunks. If your teacher gives you a 3 billion-word essay to do, start by breaking it into manageable sections. After you complete each section you’ll not only feel great, you’ll be one step nearer to your goal. Then, before you know it, you’ll have it all done.

•Prioritise. Do the most important work first. This sounds obvious but when you’re faced with boring but crucial course work and a nice map to colour in. The map often wins.

•Stay healthy. Regular exercise (even if it’s walking down the shops to buy a Mars Bar) is very important. An active body leads to an active mind, after all. Also, eating sensibly is also a good tactic. Your brain burns an enormous amount of energy so eat regularly and don’t skip meals. But, conversely, don’t overdo it on the high sugar foods and caffeine. They can negatively affect your performance.

•Chill out. Use leisure time as a carrot to get you to finish your work. You’ll find once your homework is out of the way you’ll enjoy your own time a lot more.

What's Inside Your Backpack? Proper backpack organization can greatly reduce backpack clutter and exess weight. To save backpack space, try consolidating your assignments into a portable filing system. Pendaflex offers the Vertical File, a cool portable filing option that eliminates the need to carry multiple folders, binders and notebooks. The Vertical File is a "file" containing eight removable color coded folders. "Color file folders reduce the need for binders and other heavy items," said Mann. "Additionally, they can decrease the time spent looking for assignments by up to 50 percent. Use a different file folder for each class. For example, assign navy blue to science class documents and deignate math class papers with bright red.

Exercise Attack back pain before it starts through exercise. "Not all excercise routines are grueling-Tai Chi and Yoga are popular exercise styles that help increase muscle strength and stamina, while producing a calming effect," Mann said. "If exercise classes exceed your budget, try renting an exercise video or getting a step-by-step book, and have fun practicing these exercise techniques with friends. And remember to always consult your physician before starting any exercise routine."
