Organisation at home

More and more people now have a home office. Many are set up with the best of intentions but end up as a place where documents pile up on the desk or in the corner.

Here are some bright ideas for organising four of the most common types of household files:

Bills. Unfortunately, we all have loads of these. The smartest way is to divide your bills into two sections – to be paid and paid. You can, for example, use a hanging folder called ‘bills’, with two inside folders, to separate the paid and unpaid bills.

Warranties. Make sure you don’t lose these in case you want to make a claim on your purchase during the guarantee period. One of the securest ways to file them is in a pocket, which you keep in a ring binder. Use an A-Z index, so that you can find them quickly again.

Receipts. Have you ever needed to take something back to the store but can’t find the receipt? As receipts come in a variety of sizes, some of which are very small, the safest way of making sure they don’t get misplaced or fall out is to keep them in a pocket that is only open at the top.

Insurance Documents. As the average household has a range of insurance policies, including buildings, contents, car, life cover and so on, it makes sense to categorise them. An ideal way to do this is to use an expanding file with built-in pockets that divide papers into their own specific sections. You’ll always find the papers you need quickly and easily. What’s more, because the file is expandable, it has plenty of room to file more documents in the future.
